The most interesting James Bond turns out to be an older Swedish man
who loves the character so much, he changed his name to Gunnar James
Bond Sch�fer. Abandoned by his father at the age of 2, Schafer
adopted the late 007 author Ian Fleming as his stand-in father
figure. (Shafer's emotive speech to Fleming at his gravesite is both
touching and chillingly gothic.) Shafer wears 007 suits, sports a
Pierce Brosnan GQ haircut, stocks an incredible wine cabinet, and
has created a 007 museum in Nybro, Sweden.

Perhaps the wildest story in this is about Gunnar Schaefer,

his auto parts store that houses many Bond props.

still where about. But one ting that in many ways come to fill the void is -
James Bond. Gunnar has even added action-hero's name to his own.
It is easy to understand Gunnar Sch�fer believe that the addition of the names
of James Bond and most are for fun. Perhaps a test to see how far it can stretch
the Swedish name law. a differente way to advertise the museum .
But the history behind Gunnar Sch�fer name extensions are a deeper and more
complex story. Gunnar finds that he "did not grow up on bright side of life".
Two events in childhood have been differently affected him much. The first
occurred when Gunnar was only two year. His father was German and fought for his
country during World War II. After the war he came to Sweden and met Gunnar's
mom. They married and had four children.
One day the father said that he would go on vacation to Germany to try to locate
his parents, who he lost contact with during the war. After a week it tumbled
down a card that her father sent from Denmark, but after the family never heard
of him. He had vanished without trace.
- Although I do not remember so much of the event itself, it was obviously a big
disaster for my entire family. Mom could not take care of us children while
alone account for supplies, so we had to go to the welfare office for help.
- Psychological dad also left a great vacuum with a lot of unanswered questions
behind him: Did he have another family left in Germany? Was he miserable and
damaged by their war experiences? Did he not cared about me and my siblings?
These questions, I have lived with throughout my life, "says Gunnar
Sch�fer.

The headquarters of the British spy organization MI6 suffers an
explosion early in the film. As part of his plan to humiliate M, Silva
hacks into MI6�s computer network and then proceeds to level the
building in a massive explosion. Renard plants a bomb in MI6
headquarters in order to kill an oil baron. The damage is much less
extensive than in Skyfall, but it gets the plot going with a
bang. This is another bold move by these films. MI6 is supposed to be
one of the most secure locations in the world, but the villain finds a
way to sneak a bomb inside it and kill many people. Suddenly nothing is
safe anymore. The World Is Not Enough doesn�t do a good job of
addressing the implications of this terrorist attack, though. Skyfall
moves MI6 to an underground location after the explosion, and some
characters are visibly shaken by the attack.

Bond is alive and well and living in the south east of Sweden. Or at
least his namesake is.12)

Gunnar Sch�fer has just been given the all clear from the tax board
to make some alterations to his name.
He may now officially refer himself as Nils Gunnar Bond James
Sch�fer. Or Bond, James Bond for short.
If ever Sweden was to have its own 007, Gunnar Sch�fer has
long seemed the most likely candidate.
In 1959 Sch�fer's father, who had been a German secret
service agent during the Second World War, disappeared in mysterious
circumstances.
"It was the time of the Cold War. He went away on holiday
and we never heard from him again. Perhaps somebody wanted him dead.
I just don't know," Sch�fer told The Local.
The loss of his father at a very young age is intimately
linked to his life-long interest in 007.
In 1965, the eight-year-old Sch�fer settled down to watch
'Goldfinger' with his older brother. The experience was to alter his
young life.
"I began to compare Ian Fleming's life to that of my
father. I read the novels and found all the similarities.
"Like my father, Fleming had also been a secret agent. He
became a sort of mentor to me.
"'Goldfinger' helped me to get on with my life and it
brought me closer to my father," he said.
Gunnar Sch�fer's fascination with all things Bond is evident
in every aspect of his life.
For example, his mobile phone number ends with the digits 007.
One of his cars, the original BMW used in 'Goldeneye', is
registered 007 JB.
And just like Ian Fleming's Jamaican estate, Sch�fer's house
in Kalmar is called 'Goldeneye'.
He also dresses like Bond. At least once a week he puts on his
dinner jacket and sits down to watch a 007 classic.
"Sometimes I'll drink a dry martini. But usually I pour
myself a glass of Bollinger champagne, which was Albert Broccoli's
favourite drink and also something Bond is quite fond of," said
Sch�fer.
When he's not being Bond, Gunnar Sch�fer runs a car parts
business in Nybro. It was here that he first began displaying some
of the memorabilia for the world's first 007 museum.
"It was in 2002, when 'Die Another Day' was about to come
out. I set aside a small space in my shop".
The embryonic museum was later moved to a much larger premises.
Spread over 350 square metres of exhibition space, the museum now
houses a cinema, games consoles and a casino, as well as an
impressive array of 007 artifacts ranging from cars to specially
designed glasses.
But what about 007's famed collection of short-term
girlfriends? Does Sch�fer share his hero's handy knack of proving
irresistible to the opposite sex?
"Yes and no," he laughed.
"They are often very curious, even the ones who don't
like 007.
"After they meet me and I tell them the story about my
father they usually end up liking Bond," he said.

Den 8 mars firar man att Barbie
fyller 60 �r med en utst�llning i Bergrummet p� Skeppsholmen i
Stockholm. Nybros egna James Bond – Gunnar Sch�fer kommer att bidra med
fyra stycken av sina egna James Bond-Barbiedockor till utst�llningen
fr�n sitt James Bond /Exhibition 007-museum i Nybro.
– F�rr gjorde man ju bara en typ av Barbiedockor. Alla skulle ha
smal midja och s� vidare men nu s� finns det dockor som sitter i
rullstol eller har tappat en arm, till och med James
Bond-dockor, s�ger Gunnar Sch�fer.

Gunnar Sch�fer har fyra stycken dockor som han l�nar ut till
utst�llningen i Bergrummet:
Dockorna James Bond och Barbie som inte har n�gon speciell

is the premiere of a documentary about people around the world named
James Bond. One of them is in Nybro, Sweden. Gunnar Bond James
Sch�fer has for several years, since 2002 a James Bond Museum in
Nybro. Almost two years ago, he called and asked to be included in
the documentary "The Other Fellow" along with several other men
around the world who is the namesake of the action hero James Bond.
- It feels really fun and although I already fairly well known for
my museum and center James Bond interest there will be in a
completely different way now. The film, following the lives of real
men around the world named James Bond, begins shooting this week

James Bond-flygplan p� flygplatsen i Kalmar.
Samma modell som anv�nts i tre Bond-filmer.
Det h�r planet kommer dessutom att stanna i Kalmar
l�n. Det �r Gunnar James Bond Sch�fer som driver
Bondmuseet i Nybro som k�pt det f�r att st�lla ut i
museet.
– Jag tyckte att det h�r planet var det mest
rimliga, f�r storleksm�ssigt f�r det plats i mitt
museum, s�ger Gunnar James Bond Sch�fer.
Han har v�ntat l�nge p� just den h�r dagen, f�r det
�r ett flygplan han har saknat i sitt museum. Och
den h�r modellen var den han helst ville ha.
– Det h�r planet har funnits i m�nga, m�nga
generationer. Planen har transporterat alla m�jliga
m�nniskor runt hela jorden, s� det har verkligen
historia. Det �r ett genuint plan, som d� ocks�
anv�nts i James Bond-filmerna. Det k�nns klockrent,

Den som
�r James Bond-beundrare kan �ka till Nybro d�r
v�rldens enda Bond-museum finns. Nu finns d�r en
gondol som �r likadan som den gondol som anv�ndes i
Bond-filmern Moonraker. Filmen Moonraker kom 1979
och i en scen f�rdas d�tidens James Bond, Roger
Moore, i en gondol genom Venedigs kanaler.
Museets �gare
Gunnar Sch�fer, som sj�lv lagt till Bond...James
Bond som mellannamn, har k�mpat i fem �r f�r att f�
tag i en gondol som liknar den som Bond anv�nde i
filmen. Det har varit sv�rt eftersom m�nga av
Venedigs gondoler g�r i arv och att det �r f� som
vill skiljas fr�n dem.
Men nu har han
allts� lyckats, och gondolen finns p� plats i Nybro
f�r den som vill se den.

Gunnar Bond James Sch�fer driver sedan flera �r ett James
Bond-museum i Nybro. F�r snart tv� �r sedan blev han
uppringd och tillfr�gad om att vara med i dokument�ren ”The
Other Fellow” tillsammans med en rad andra m�n runtom i
v�rlden som �r namne med actionhj�lten James Bond.
– Det k�nns riktigt roligt och �ven om jag redan �r ganska
k�nd f�r mitt museum och mitt James Bond-intresse s� blir
det p� ett helt annat s�tt nu.
Gunnar Sch�fer var en s� stor Bond-fantast att han till och med
bytte namn till Gunnar Bond James Sch�fer. Dessutom driver han sedan
flera �r ett James Bond-museum i Nybro.

agentlivet p� Universal Exports och MI6 �r en annan. Bond-utst�llningen
p� Nybro bibliotek �r snart �ver, men engagemanget tryter inte f�r det.
- Jag har s� m�nga id�er att jag inte vet var jag skall b�rja,
skrattar han n�r Barometern-OT tar en titt p� det utst�llda materialet.
Smoking och klocka
Han �r �ndam�lsenligt kl�dd i smoking. Runt handleden sitter klockan
fr�n Die Another Day och runt halsen h�nger en vit halsduk.
Utst�llningen bjuder p� ett urval av vad entusiasten har samlat ihop
sedan han uppt�ckte hj�lten 1962 d� han tillsammans med sin �ldre bror
s�g Goldfinger p� bio.
H�r finns modeller av samtliga bilar och andra fordon som f�rekommit
i filmerna. Klockor, t�ndare, t�rningar, affischer
fr�n Agent 007 med r�tt att
d�da till den senaste Die
Another day pryder v�ggarna, och expos�ns guldkorn �r signera-
de foton av alla som spelat Bond: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger
Moore, Timothy Dalton.
Gunnar Sch�fer �r f�dd 1957 och v�xte upp med Connery, men trots det
menar han att den komplette Bond heter Pierce Brosnan.
- Han har precis allt det Bond skall ha - inte minst sv�rmodet.
H�ngiven k�mpe
Bond �r en klassisk hj�lte; en h�ngiven k�mpe of�rm�gen att �lska
eftersom hans hj�rta
sargats h�rt. Hans nyblivna hustru, Teresa, blir m�rdad i
I hennes majest�ts hemliga tj�nst och d�refter g�r han som en
rastl�s, repliksnabb gast fr�n famn till famn. Han hade lika g�rna
kunnat heta Zorro,
D�Artagnan eller Batman. Lyckan �r hans offer - j�mvikten �r hans
m�l.
Samlarens favorit bland de tjugo filmerna �r I hennes majest�ts
hemliga tj�nst - den som �r den mest utsk�llda bland ickeexperterna.
Gunnar Sch�fer menar att det intressantaste i sammanhanget egentligen
�r den lungsiktige upphovsmannen Ian Fleming som under sitt korta liv -
f�dd 1908, d�d 1964 - skrev tolv romaner och tv� noveller om sin agent.
- Fleming var inom flottans underr�ttelsetj�nst under kriget. N�gon
hemlig agent var han inte, men visste vad han skrev om. Det �r helt
fantastiskt n�r man t�nker efter. Vid skrivmaskinen i huset Golden Eye
p� Jamaica skapade han en karakt�r som i princip �r k�nd vart man �n
kommer i hela v�rlden - och det �r �ver 50 �r sedan det b�rjade.
P� firman Nybro Bildelar tr�ngs det ordinarie utbudet med allehanda
Bondprylar. Bilar, udda affischer - och s� f�rst�s �gonstenen: En
skogsgr�n Jaguar E-type fr�n 1962 - identisk med bilen i Bondsatiren
Casino Royale fr�n 1967.
- Jag planerar att skriva en bok om Bond, s�ger Gunnar Sch�fer. Och
jag har kontakt med flera bolag som har intressen i Bond - till exempel
Jaguar, Omega, Aston Martin och champagnef�retaget Bollinger. Intresset
f�r s�dant h�r material �r oerh�rt stort utomlands.
�ppnar eget museum
Och i n�sta �r �ppnar du ett museum - vilka f�rhoppningar har du?
- Det kommer att bli fantastiskt och jag tror knappt det �r sant.
Till �ppnandet kommer branschfolk och m�nga har visat stort intresse f�r
det jag g�r. Visst, det verkar nog underligt, men vad�... Det �r oerh�rt
kul och jag �lskar verkligen det jag g�r, s�ger Gunnar Sch�fer.

Doc Edge is proud to continue its hybrid festival format of
in-person and virtual screenings, offering the best of both worlds
for film lovers. Films will be available to stream online nationwide
from 1 June – 10 July, with one-off screenings of selected films in
their full cinematic glory for week-long runs at cinemas in Auckland
and Wellington.
Organisers look forward to hosting international directors in-person
again during the festival who, borders allowing, will attend the
Awards, industry forum, masterclasses, and premiere film screenings.
